Abstract
Background/Aims : Statin decreases C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. However, it is unclear whether this effect is mediated by direct effect or secondary to low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) lowering. We evaluated the relation between changes in CRP and cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolemic patients treated with statins with different potencies.

Methods: Hypercholesterolemic patients were divided into two groups, the atorvastatin group (n=77) and the lovastatin group (n=66). Lipid and CRP levels were measured before and after 2 months of therapy.

Results: Atorvastatin lowered LDL-C levels (41.5%, P<0.001) more than lovastatin (31.5%, P<0.001) (P<0.001). CRP levels decreased in the atorvastatin group (from 1.67¡¾0.36 to 1.18¡¾1.16 mg/L, P=0.007) and in the lovastatin group (from 1.68¡¾0.45 mg/L to 1.34¡¾0.39 mg/L, P=0.096) with borderline significance. Changes in CRP levels were not different between the two groups (P=0.14). Changes in CRP levels were not related to those in LDL-C (r=0.08, P=0.34) and cholesterol (r=0.01, P=0.90) at all and were only related to baseline CRP levels (r=0.67, P<0.001).

Conclusions:Changes in CRP levels were not related to changes in total and LDL-C levels. This finding suggests that CRP lowering effect of statin is not secondary to cholesterol lowering effect but the direct effect of the drug.
